This month we’re honored to be supporting One Girl Can in their mission to rebuild Ushirika School in the Kibera Slum in Nairobi by donating 20% of all proceeds from Woodlot Skincare in the month of March to help them raise their goal of $5,000.
Who is One Girl Can?
One Girl Can is breaking the cycle of poverty and impacting gender equality through education and mentorship. Using a holistic model that empowers a girl from the time she leaves primary school until the day she gains meaningful employment, the organization is built upon three pillars - We Build. We Educate. We Mentor.
In 2008, One Girl Can built a new classroom block of six classrooms at a school called Ushirika in the Kibera slum, in Nairobi. At roughly the size of Central Park, and with over a million residents, Kibera is the largest urban slum in Africa, but receives no government support to provide water, electricity, sanitation, garbage pickup, health care, or education.
Due to the collapse of a school in another slum in Nairobi last September, which killed 11 children, the government immediately began closing down schools in the three Nairobi slums where safe building standards have not been complied with.
One Girl Can’s plan is to rebuild Ushirika School, where they currently sponsor 35 girls, so that they can further ensure that the school continues to be a safe and dynamic learning environment for many years to come.
