Is anyone else already feeling the holidays? With heavy dinners, creamy rum and eggnogs + plates full of sugary treats, this time of year can be especially indulgent. Mindful indulgence is fine, of course, but going overboard can lead to issues like poor digestion, skin inflammation and low energy - and ain’t nobody got time for that. This is when it becomes even more important than usual to treat your body well and show it some tender loving care. I don’t know about you, but I hate getting to the end of the season feeling like I need a detox, so I make sure to prioritize regular, gentle daily detox rituals so I can continue to feel my best during the chaos of the season.
Gentle, daily detox for your most mindful holiday season yet.
Today, I’m sharing a few of my favourite rituals to help you feel vibrant, vital + energized all the way into 2018.
Dry brushing is one of my absolute favourite ways to show myself some love – and at the same time it’s an excellent way to stimulate micro-circulation and blood flow resulting in smooth, glowing skin. Familiar with the lymph system? It’s a network made up of lymph vessels and nodes and carries nutrients, lymph fluid and waste between body tissues and the blood stream. When we’re sedentary lymph has a hard time moving through the body as it should, which can result in puffiness, sluggish energy and water retention. Since I have no interest in any of this, one of my favourite mindful detox tricks is regular dry brushing.
How To Dry Brush
Using a stiff bristle brush (you can find at almost any natural health food store) you simply brush the skin using long, slow movements towards the heart. To begin, start at the feet and move up the legs, similarly, when you start on your arms, begin at the hands and work upward. Use firm, small strokes upwards, or work in a circular motion. I love dry brushing my stomach in counterclockwise circles (especially if I know I’m going to be eating heavy meals) to help stimulate and encourage healthy digestion. Harsh exfoliation is never the point; be sure not to press too hard, or use too-stiff of a brush. Can’t get your hands on a brush? Throw together an easy body scrub and apply to dry skin using circular motions to reap many of the same benefits.
Done brushing? Time to hop in the shower to remove any dead skin cells that might be hanging around post brush. Use lukewarm water and cleanse using pure, all-natural soap to avoid drying out skin. I love adding a few drops of essential oils to my shower and reach for Recharge when I need a little boost. A stimulating combo of peppermint and rosemary – this is the perfect oil to help support deep breath (one of my other favourite detox tools). In the shower, pay attention to your breathing and slowly count to 4 each breath in and out – and notice as the stress releases all the way from your neck and shoulders to the tips of your toes.
Post shower, pat skin dry and mist skin with any of your favourite Woodlot everyday mists. I love reaching for Sweetgrass – a beautiful blend of detox stimulating ingredients like juniper berry and sweetgrass. Follow-up with a thin layer of Recharge Nourishing Body Lotion and you’re set.
