We’re creatures of habit, aren’t we? Whether it’s a morning ritual or the meal you always order at your favourite vegan restaurant, us humans are really good at recognizing patterns and we tend to associate certain thoughts, feelings and emotions with each one.
Take your morning cup of coffee for example, a beverage we often compulsively reach for without even realizing why. Yes sure, it might be the caffeine kick needed after one too many late nights – but more often than not, it’s the feelings associated with the ritual of preparing your favourite cup of joe that keep you going back for more. Perhaps you associate coffee with productivity, creativity, increased mental clarity or energy… am I hitting on anything here?
So today, I’m sharing a delicious elixir filled with energy boosting, immune supportive ingredients to sub in place of your usual cup of the black stuff. You may find you don’t need that daily cup (or five) quite as much as you think you do - welcome to your new morning ritual.
Maple Carob + Chaga Latte
1.5 tbsp carob powder
1.5 cup coconut milk
1 tsp chaga powder
1 tsp he shou wu powder
1 tsp maple syrup (add more or less to taste)
1 tsp coconut oil or coconut butter
1/4 cup boiling water
Pinch of cinnamon
In a mug or small measuring cup, combine chaga, he shou wu and carob
Pour hot water over mixture and stir until well combined, forming a paste
Heat coconut milk and coconut oil in a pot until just hot to touch, add to blender with chaga mixture, sweetener and pinch of cinnamon
Blitz for 30 seconds and pour into your favourite mug
Pause - and enjoy the aroma of this delicious concoction. Breathe deeply and slowly take your first mindful sip.
Why you should drink this
Carob is a flowering evergreen shrub that belongs to the pea family. Think of it as a caffeine free alternative to cacao. It has a similar, yet distinct taste that lends itself well to delicious, maple-y concoctions. The tannins in carob contain gallic acid which is ananalgesic, anti-allergic, antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral and antiseptic. Carob also helps to support healthy digestion, manage blood cholesterol levels and maintain strong, healthy bones.
A mushroom that grows on birch trees, chaga is gaining massive exposure as a ‘new’ superfood, but has actually been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. Known as the ‘diamond of the forest’ chaga contains one of the highest known concentrations of antioxidants of any foods and is an excellent source of vitamin D, vitamin K, B vitamins, various minerals like iron, calcium, copper and zinc, as well as flavonoids, polysaccharides and other phytonutrients. Count on chaga to help protect cells, reduce inflammation, cleanse the liver, aid digestion and support the immune system.
He Shou Wu
Nicknamed “Mr. He’s Black Hair”, after the legendary elder who restored his youthfulness and virility by consuming the root, He shou wu is a wonderful longevity tonic revered for it’s rejuvenating properties.
